“And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His name Jesus.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David:...
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. … For with God nothing shall be impossible.
And Mary said, Behold the hand-maid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word…” Luke 1:30-38
I had the opportunity to play the role of Mary in a musical right before I became a mother for the first time. I remember really putting myself in her shoes and wondering how difficult it would have been to be an unwed pregnant woman in the first century. And even then, I’m not sure that Mary knew all that she signed up for. As Simeon told her, “A sword shall pierce through thy own soul also” (Luke 2:35). But in everything her beautiful submission from the very beginning is so inspiring. Perhaps it was Mary’s example that paved the way for her son’s own submission in the Garden of Gethsemane as He said, “...not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42). He surrendered just like His mother.
